Creating Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)

The DSS-1 does not have PWM. However, there is a known trick to achieve the PWM effect on Oscillator 2. This trick can work on other synths that lack PWM but have oscillator sync. Here is how to do it:

1. Set both oscillators to sawtooth waveforms.
2. Put Sync Mode On.
3. Set OSC MG Select to Osc1.
4. Set OSC MG Intensity between 75% and 100%.
5. Set OSC MG Frequency between 10% and 30% for a slow sweep.
6. Adjust the OSC 1 Octave to taste. A higher setting like 4' will produce a "grainer" PWM, while 16' produces a "smoother" PWM.
7. Try square instead of sawtooth waveforms for either Oscillator, for different sounding results.

Using these settings, Osc2 becomes the PWM waveform. You can then blend this with the non-PWM waveform from Osc1 for a thicker sound. Note that the actual sound emitted from Osc2 is true Pulse Width Modulation, not "emulated" or "faked". The OSC MG Frequency determines the amount of PWM, from subtle to aggressive.
